IWOAI comes back to its BAVARIAN roots —THE FULL story now published in OSTIMA

The International Workshop on Osteoarthritis Imaging (IWOAI) has become one of the most distinctive scientific meetings in the osteoarthritis imaging community.
What began in 2007 in the small pre-Alpine Bavarian village of Ainring, with Felix Eckstein as the first-time organizer, has grown into a truly international workshop. The meeting is held every year since then by different organizers around the world, without a single annual meeting having been dropped over the 2 decades. In June 2026, IWOAI returns to Bavaria for its 20th edition, taking place in Munich from June 23–26, 2026.
The history, philosophy, and community spirit behind IWOAI are now described in a recent Perspective article in Osteoarthritis Imaging Journal (OSTIMA) that is titled:
It is authored by Felix Eckstein (Paracelsus Medical University Salzburg & Chondrometrics, Freilassing), David Hunter (University of Sydney, Australia), and Ali Guermazi (Boston University, MA)
OSTIMA is the official journal of the International Society of Osteoarthritis Imaging (ISOAI) and has recently achieved indexing in PubMed — an important milestone for the journal and for the OA imaging community.
For Chondrometrics, IWOAI has always been more than just a scientific meeting. It is a place where imaging science, quantitative analysis, MRI methodology, biomarkers, AI-based approaches, and clinical translation come together — and where long-standing collaborations and friendships continue to grow.

•This paper provides an outstanding overview of where the IWOAI came from, how it has evolved, and where it is heading. Felix did a remarkable job leading this effort, and the final manuscript is both comprehensive and highly informative. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to co-author this paper with my longstanding friends and colleagues, David Hunter and Felix Eckstein.
