Tom Turmezei Appointed as Honorary Medical Director of Radiology and Imaging Science

With Prof. Turmezei’s honorary appointment, Chondrometrics further strengthens clinical radiology and imaging science expertise for the company, supporting its mission to advance high-precision imaging endpoints for osteoarthritis research and clinical trials.

Prof. Turmezei is a Consultant Musculoskeletal Radiologist at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals, Honorary Professor at the University of East Anglia, and Visiting Researcher at the University of Cambridge. He is internationally recognized for his work in musculoskeletal radiology, osteoarthritis imaging, weight-bearing CT, quantitative 3-D joint analysis, and advanced imaging biomarkers.

He has been a member of the Chondrometrics Scientific Advisory Board since 2023 and has provided continuous and highly valuable input to the company’s scientific and strategic development. This new level of involvement brings his radiological, clinical, and imaging science expertise even more closely to Chondrometrics’ daily business.

Prof. Turmezei’s career reflects a rare combination of clinical radiology, engineering science, quantitative imaging, and osteoarthritis research. After clinical medical training at the University of Oxford, specialist training in radiology in the UK, a clinical musculoskeletal radiology fellowship at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, and a PhD in Engineering from the University of Cambridge, he has built an internationally visible profile at the interface of radiology, image analysis, and joint disease.

His scientific work has contributed substantially to the development and validation of advanced quantitative joint assessment techniques. These include 3-D multiparametric analysis of cartilage morphology from MRI and quantitative assessment of joint space width from weight-bearing CT. His work has helped advance the use of multi-modality imaging biomarkers in osteoarthritis by linking clinical imaging interpretation with robust quantitative analysis.

Prof. Turmezei has received Young Investigator Awards at the International Workshop on Osteoarthritis Imaging, held the Roentgen Professorship of the Royal College of Radiologists, founded and chaired the Computed Tomography in Osteoarthritis (OCTA) Research initiative, served as Academic Committee Member of the Royal College of Radiologists, and contributed to the National Institute for Health and Care Research UK Imaging Workforce Working Group. He also serves on the board of the International Weight Bearing Computed Tomography Society and organized the 19th International Workshop on Osteoarthritis Imaging in Cambridge in 2025.

In addition to his medical and scientific work, Prof. Turmezei has contributed to the broader field of imaging through collaborations with UK cultural institutions, including the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge and the Hunterian Museum in London. He has served as Imaging Editor for Gray’s Anatomy, Elsevier, for the 42nd and 43rd editions, and is Co-founder and Director of KNEE3D Ltd, a UK startup providing advanced research imaging analysis services from CT imaging.

The development of quantitative imaging biomarkers requires a close connection between clinical radiology, image analysis, biomarker science, and the practical realities of clinical trials. Imaging endpoints must be more than numbers extracted from scans. They need to be clinically meaningful, methodologically robust, biologically interpretable, and credible to regulators, clinicians, sponsors, and patients.

With Prof. Turmezei’s appointment, Chondrometrics further embeds radiology and imaging science expertise within the company. This strengthens the company’s ability to support osteoarthritis clinical research with imaging endpoints that are both technically precise and clinically relevant.
